Anyways, I discovered yesterday that as of rc3, oggenc has supported the "-q" flag for specifying a quality rather than target bit rate. "-q 8" seems to produce the same quality as 256kbps, but is at least 10% smaller, which is good. The docs imply that anything over "-q 7" is probably useless, but I could definitely tell the difference in the violin tone on the title track of Flying Vegetables of the Apocalypse.
